frostburg state university’s early childhood/elementary education bachelor’s program is one of only two in maryland to offer dual certification. when you graduate from this degree program, you will be prepared to teach in any prekindergarten through sixth grade classroom. as a participant in the program, you will complete an early childhood specialization. the early childhood/elementary program is a well-balanced preparation for teaching that includes challenging classroom assignments and extensive field experience working in our partner schools. the program’s high standards and excellent reputation have resulted in an outstanding job placement record for our teacher graduates.

early childhood foundations – gain an introduction to the profession of early childhood education, including the growth and development of young children. examine historic, theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of current early childhood programs. explore play, learning environments and curriculum.
early childhood learning environment, materials and methods – examine and assess developmentally appropriate environments, materials and methods for young children, from birth to age 8. the course includes planning physically and psychologically safe and healthy learning environments.
adults in the child’s world – explore the early childhood educator’s influence on and collaboration with the child’s caregivers, families and communities. understand the use of local, state and national resources to meet child, family and community educational needs. examine the development of respectful reciprocal relationships with families and communities.
