frostburg state university’s law and society bachelor’s degree program ranks as one of the most popular undergraduate majors at the university. it is an interdisciplinary program that gives you great flexibility in tailoring your degree to fit your unique career and academic interests in the areas of criminal justice or law. although the program is not offered as a minor, it is a degree that is often taken as a double major combined with political science, sociology or another compatible area of study.
- choose from two concentrations: criminal justice, which is focused on law enforcement, or legal studies, which prepares students for law school or work in the court system.
law and society – criminal justice concentration highlights:
enter the exciting career field of law enforcement. many of our criminal justice graduates hold positions with the state and local police departments, the atf, corrections, juvenile justice and the secret service.
gain an understanding of the workings of the united states criminal justice system, including its agencies, personnel and diverse responsibilities.
acquire excellent written and oral skills, an understanding of ethics and ethical behavior, civil rights and liberties and theories of punishment and corrections.
complete an internship with such organizations as the state police, c3i (maryland’s csi equivalent) or federal law enforcement, if desired.
join our campus chapter of the national law enforcement explorers for discussions about police tactics, appropriate responses during a vehicle stop or domestic situation and other law enforcement concerns.
law and society – legal studies concentration highlights:
gain the background and knowledge you need to enter law school or attend graduate school in the area of public policy or another related field.
complete an internship working with the district attorney’s office, the courts or a law office, if desired.
understand the political influences on judicial decision-making, the evolution of the right to privacy, environmental law, plea bargaining, police discretion, the role and function of juries, the legal environment of business, the juvenile justice system, disputes over constitutional interpretation and the philosophical underpinnings of the commitment to free expression.
develop a knowledge of the many different types of law practices operating in the united states and receive guidance that may help you decide how best to direct your future career.

criminology – study the social causes and consequences of criminal behavior. learn about criminal law, the police, courts and correctional institutions.
american public policy – apply analytical tools to american public policy areas. compare strengths and weaknesses of markets and governments, and techniques for framing policy questions. explore current policy areas through simulations and analysis.
